September Tarot Practice: Revisiting Past Readings
The start of the autumn season is a natural time to reflect on how far you’ve come this year. Spiritually, fall is associated with wisdom and reaping the benefits of your hard work over the spring and summer. Ideally, you’ll use this information to make worthy changes during winter so that you can hit the ground running come the following spring. Hopefully, you have recorded your tarot and oracle spreads and daily draws throughout the year. A wonderful practice to do right about this time of year is to go back and review your readings.
Read through all of them and see if you can find any patterns or natural points of evolution. You can also reflect on how much of your readings actually came true. Looking back on them now, do you find that your readings have been accurate? Or perhaps your understanding of the card's meaning has evolved now. You might have learned insights that you didn’t consider before.
You can use this deeper level of understanding to help you develop as a tarot reader and for your personal growth. Going back and reviewing your readings helps you to see how your perspective of each card can evolve over time. You can only grow with time and experience and part of that is reviewing your progress.
Reviewing cards can also help to build your confidence if you find that your readings have been pretty spot on. If not, then you have a ton of information to help you to improve or you may find that tarot and oracle reading isn’t really for you and that’s ok. There are many other forms of divination to try if this doesn’t feel like it lands. You can also reflect on other types of readings such as candle scrying or tea leaf for this exercise.
Some additional questions you might want to consider are:
What was your favorite reading this year? Why did it resonate so much?
What was your least favorite reading this year? Did you still learn something from it?
What reading, if any, would you interpret differently now?
What card appeared the most this year? What additional insights can you gain from its frequent appearance in this year’s readings?
How has your reading style changed from the start of the year until now?
Has your tarot/oracle practice been fulfilling? If not, what do you think is missing?
If you used more than one kind of deck, which was your favorite and the most accurate?
When were you the most consistent in your tarot/oracle practice?
When were you the least consistent in your tarot/oracle practice? What struggles did you have during this time that prevented you from being more committed to your practice?
Now that you have all of this information, consider how you can use it to set new goals for the rest of the year or to adjust old ones. Perhaps there is a particular deck that seems to be the most accurate so you only use that one moving forward. Or maybe you find there is one deck that has been difficult for you to interpret so you challenge yourself to work exclusively with that one or you don’t use it at all. Or you may find you have been too ambitious in your tarot practice and need to adjust accordingly. Whether that’s realizing you aren’t ready to read for other people just yet or that a weekly tarot spread isn’t as practical as you thought it would be. Don’t consider anything to be a failure, only a chance to learn and evolve.
I also find the start of autumn to be a good time to take a small break from tarot readings. The end of September is a great time to pause your practice, perhaps choosing to focus on clearing and protecting yourself instead. You may wish to consider a deep energy cleanse especially after such a large review of information. This will help you to let go of any feelings of failure or inadequacy if your practice wasn’t what you hoped it would be. Sometimes a change of pace or just a short break is enough to refresh you and give you a new perspective.
